The tie Valera Government was defeated in the Dail by 64 votes to 63 on the second reading of the Transport Bill. , The Goverment has announced that a general election will be beld. Polling day will probably be May .»<). The Transport Bill provided for the incorporation of a new transport company with a capital not exceeding £20,000,000 to take over the Great Southern Railway and the Dublin United Transport Company. The Government recently inquired into maiket transactions in Great Southern Rai - way shares. , The Dublin correspondent ot ine Times” says that the Opposition parties before the Government’s deteat requested the postponement of the Transport Bill, because an official inquiry was being held into allegations that leakage of information about the proposed new company had enabled speculators to make huge sums y investing in railway shares,.
The party strengths in the Dail at present are: Government (Fianna Fail) 66, Fine Gael 32, Labour 1G Farmer and Clann na Talmlian 14, Independent 8.
