BOROUGH AFFAIRS.

UNREGISTERED DOGS. There was a full attendance of the meeting of the Ashburton Borough Council last evening, there being present the Mayor (Dr. J. Connor), the deputy-Mayor (Mr A. A. McDonald), Messrs A. IT. Todd, H. "W. Shellatt, W. H. Sarney, IT. W. Smallbone, A. 11. Fenn, E. C. Bathurst, 11. G. Ferrier, W. S. Kerr, W. H. Amos and JThompson. ‘ . The Superintendent of the Volunteer Fire Brigade (Mr H. Hefford) reported that the new lire engine was completed and ready to be handed over. An official ceremony would take place next Monday evening. Mr Smallbone, who had inspected the engine said it was a credit to the Brigade, and a tradesman’s job. He estimated that the. Brigade, by the assembling of tlie engine on the chassis, which cost the Council only a. small amount, find saved between £l5O to £l7O.

An invitation by the Scout secretary (Mrs G. M. Stay!) to the birthday party of the scouts on Thursday evening was accepted. It was decided that owners of unregistered dogs be notified that action will be taken. A request that the Council construct channelling along the western side of Trevor’s Road was received from eight ratepayers. With the winter approaching it was very necessary that this work should be completed as early as possible, it was stated. The matter was referred to the Works Committee. The financial statement for the year showed the expenditure in the general account as £20,440. The main items were: Highways, £1000; streets and footways, £2729; domain, £231(.
