CONDITION OF RACES.
DIRTY WATER AT RUAPUNA. AFFECTING DOMESTIC SUPPLY. The condition of the water-races in the Ruapuna district was the subject of a complaint considered by the County Council yesterday. Mr S. P. Taylor said that a woman living in that district told him she had not been able to wash clothes for three months because of dirty water in the races, upon which she depended for domestic supply. Mr Taylor declared that races there were “travelling mud,” and he went so far as to say that “potatoes could have been grown in it.” Mr W. G. Gallagher: That has been going on for about six months. It is the result of puddling operations to seal the Rangitata diversion race.
The Engineer (Mr H. A. Vezey) said the matter had been taken up with the irrigation engineer at Methven (Mr J. O. Riddell), who said that the nuisance would probably stop during the week-ends. This, however, had not proved correct.
New races would be wanted all through that district after the race was opened, because the existing ones would become silted up, said Mr M. S. Turton.
Mr Taylor said the condition of the races was a serious matter for those who depended on them for drinking water.
The Engineer was instructed to again take the matter up with Mr Riddell.
