PATROL BOATS SUNK.

POSSIBLY IN ERROR. SYDNEY, March 31. Two Allied patrol torpedo-boats were sunk by air attack ofl New Britain on Monday with the loss of seven of the crews. Announcing this. Gencral Mac Art bur’s communique to-day says: “Preliminary reports indicate the possibility that friendly aeroplanes. failing to recognise identification signals, may have mistakenly attacked.”

The torpedo-boats were operating against enemy barge traffic in the north of New Britain waters. It was possible that the attacking aitci aft Were Kittyhawks or Beaufighters. In the Solomons a third patrol tor-pedo-boat was lost when operating on a special spotting mission close to Bougainville Island. Four men weie killed when a shell, probably from an Allied destroyer, struck the patrol boat.
