FASCIST EXECUTIONS.
SIGNIFICANCE IN GERMANY. ' <1 MUSSOLINI NOT AT TRIAL. (N.Z. Press Association— Copyright.) LONDON, Jan. 12. Mussolini did not participate in the trial of Ciano and the other Fascists. Neither did he submit a statement to the tribunal, says the Zurich correspondent of the “Daily Telegraph,” quoting reports from Italy. A firing squad of 20 Blackshirt volunteers shot the'condemned men, all of whom were accorded “the privilege of not being shot in the back.” They refused to have their eyes bound.
After the last volley had been fired the officer in command lifted Ciano’s body and said: “Justice is done; long live the Duce!”
Ciano’s remains are to be placed in The family vault at Leghorn. The correspondent says that the order for the execution is believed to have come direct from Hitler. “The truo reason why the death penalty was enforced can be found in the Reich’s internal conditions. It was designed to cool the ardour of any anti-Nazi military cliques who might ho contemplating a coup such as led to the overthrow of Mussolini.”
