COUP IN BOLIVIA.
ARREST OF THE PRESIDENT.
GUN BATTLE IN CAPITAL(Rec. 12.30) LA PAZ (Bolivia) Dec. 20 The National Revolutionary Party carried out a coup and arrested the •President of Bolivia (Enrique Penaranda), two of his ministers and a number of army officers, all of whom are held incommunicado.
The publication of all newspapers has been stopped and soldiers are guarding their offices. Victor Paz Estensoro (the revolu* tionary leader) has taken over the Governor’s Palace.
The revolutionary movement comprised soldiers and youth organisations. The object of the coup Is not yet clear, but it is known that the movement is strongly opposed to the United States policies. Penaranda, who is an anti-Nazi visited the United States last May and was personally welcomed by President Roosevelt.
A radio announcement said that *a number of persons were killed or wounded in a 'gun battle, which lasted four hours, until a regiment of Federal police ceased resistance.
