VILLAGE CAPTURED

HEAVY FIGHTING GENERALLY.

STRONG OPPOSITION MET. ENEMY SUFFERS SEVERELY.

(N.Z. Press Association — (Rec. 9.35 a.m.) LONDON, Dec. 20.

A land communique confirms the capture of the village of San Pietro, at the end of the Mignano gap, and tells of heavy fighting generally. It says: “Troops of the Bth Army advanced against strong opposition in the Adriatic coast sector, where our tanks overran enemy positions, inflicting heavy casualties. In the central sector further progress was made over very difficult ground.

“Fifth Army troops captured the strongly-fortified village of'San Pietro and the advance is continuing beyond it. In several rugged mountain sectors our front lines were pushed forward as much as two miles.” According to the United Nations radio at Algiers the sth Army line now runs from Venafro through San Pietro to Rocca. With San Pietro in its hands it is pushing forward to threaten San Vittore, six miles south of the Cassino Pass, guarding the main inland road northwards. The Germans are laying mines and boobytraps. On the Bth Army front Allied forces knocked out five tanks and captured 50 parachutists—British Official Wireless.
