OBITUARY.
MR ADAM NICHOLAS.
EIGHTY YEARS IN THE COUNTY'. One of the oldest, residents of the Ashburton County, Mr Adam Nicholas, died yesterday in his 86t,h year. Born in Victoria, Australia, Mr Nicholas arrived in New Zealand in 1863, at the age of five, with his parents, Mr and Mrs Ceorge Easton Nicholas. His father obtained a position as shepherd on the Alford Estate, the family travelling from Christchurch to the top of what is now known as Greenstreet by a two-horse dray and bullock waggon. Afterwards Mr Nicholas, senior, farmed land at Spreadeagle. Mr Adam Nicholas took his first employment as a lad shepherding on the Ashburton Station, then managed by Mr 11. T. Winter, and among his many interesting reminiscences of the history of the district, he used to tell how his round took him over what is now the Ashburton Domain. After a period with his brother-in-law, Mr J. S. Bland, at Winchmore, he .engaged in high-country work at Mount White Station, in the Waimakariri Gorge.
Then Mr Nicholas farmed land at Somerton for several years, and after a period of contracting in the Rakaia district entered into partnership with his brother George, farming at Winchmore. On leaving that place he was again contracting, at Winchmore, giving that up about 25 years ago. For som'e 15 years he lived with his sister, the late Mrs Lucy Monson, at Middle Road, until the latter’s death 15 months ago. Mr Nicholas, who never married, is survived by his younger brother, Mr Fred Nicholas, who lives in Hawke’s Bay.
