COMMERCIAL NEWS.

grain and produce. SOUTH CANTERBURY MARKET,

TIMART.T, December IS

During the last week there have been numerous inquiries on the South Canterbury grain and produce‘market for cowgrass, but owing to the high price now. ruling little business has passed. The demand has also eased for Montgomery red clover, but the demand continues for all lines of certified ryegrass of high purity and germination. There has also been a good inquiry for all lines of oats, but most of the stocks have now been sold. It is anticipated that there will be a demand from England and the United States for grass seed and clover seed. ’ With the exception of odd parcels, most of last season’s wheat has been cleaned up and millers are at present fully supplied. Although some of the crops suffered damage during the wet weather a large percentage has done well, and the yields should be much better than was anticipated earlier in the season.

There have been inquiries for all lines of oats, both milling and feed, but very few lines are on offer.

Inquiries have come to hand from the North Island for chaff, and it is anticipated that they will continue for the next few months. Nominal quotations remain at £5 a ton on trucks for g.b.o.s.

There has been a good demand for any lines of barley which have been on offer. Nominal quotations remain at 4s 7d a bushel. \ Ample supplies of new potatoes are now on the market.

Inquiries for cowgrass have slackened off considerably owing to the increase in price. There has also been an easing off in the demand for all lines of Montgomery red clover and mother Italian ryegrass. Certified ryegrass of good purity and germination is still in demand, but very few lines are offering. Prices remain on a par with last week’s as follows: —Mother Italian ryegrass 11s 6d a bushel, mother ryegrass 13s, permanent pasture 12s a bushel, certified white clover 2s 3d per lb, cowgrass Is 4d per lb, permanent pasture Montgomery 2s 3d per lb, and cocksfoot Is 3d per lb.
