NOVEMBER 20. 1840 —Captain Hobson became Governor of New Zealand. 1874 —Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigrade established. 1925 —Death of Queen Alexandra. 1935 — Admiral of the Fleet Earl Jellicoe, of Scapa, who commanded the British Grand Fleet at Jutland, died. 1936 — Viscount Galway paid first official visit as Governor-General to Ashburton. 1941 —British Troops in Middle East advance more than fifty miles.

1831 —First coal shipped from New-
castle. 1917 llindenburg line smashed on a 10-mile front facing Cambrai to a depth of five miles. 1918— German fleet surrendered. 1928—Severe illness of King George V. 1941 —Axis retreat in Middle East.
