Important German air bases at Istres le Tupe and Salon, near Marseilles, were badly damaged yesterday in a double attack by Flying Fortresses and Marauders, according to a message from Allied Headquarters. Large fires and flaming aircraft were seen on the ground. Twenty or thirty enemy fighters rose to meet the Flying Fortresses over Istres le Tupc, and 12 Messerschmitt 109’s rvere shot down. The Marauders rvere over Salon a quarter of an hour later, and the enemy was able to muster only 15 fighters, one of wliiqh was shot down. The air raids against Istres le Tupe and Salon mark the renewed Allied offensive against German torpedobomber bases on the flank of the western Mediterranean shipping lanes, says Reuter’s correspondent at Algiers. In the last raid against Southern France, last August, large numbers of torpedo-bombei’s were seen to be concentrated in the Salon zone. Our bombers yesterday set on fire hangars, parked planes and warehouses.
