SPARE-TIME WORK.
POSITION OF POLICEMEN. (P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Questioned whether there Avas power under the Police Force Act for regulations governing spare-time employment of policemen and for control of their Avives engaged in essential industry, Mr J. Neltzer (general secretary of the New Zealand Police Association) said it was a matter that, was being considered by the Association. If the regulation Avas valid the country would be deprived of the A r aluable seiwices of these men at a time when they Avere desperately needed, it is argued, he said, that it Avould be reasonable for police officers AVhen off duty or on leave to have freedom from official restraint and be permitted to live their lives as they Avisli, subject only to the possibility of being called back to duty at any time in case of emergency. In regard to Avives, Mr Neltzer said that the public should be concerned to see the conflict between the ManpoAver officials and the Commissioner of Police clarified as Avell as the general question of a police officer being entitled to do as be chooses in his own private life,
