SHOULD BE ESSENTIAL.

the production of milk. BOROUGH COUNCIL’S VIEWS. The possibility of a shortage of milk at Ashburton next winter was discussed by the Borough Council last evening and it was decided that representation be made to the appropriate authority to have the production of milk declared an essential industry.

“This is an urgent matter,’’ said Mr W. S. Kerr, who introduced the subject, “and with butter rationed the position becomes more complicated. Possibly the Council could help the producers in some ways. Milk producers are not declared essential, but milk deliverers are —perhaps we could take action there. If there is a shortage of milk the health of the community will he threatened.

The Mayors said that as Ashburton was not a dairying district the question of winter supply was the chief difficulty. The only apparent solution was an increase in price, although that would not be popular with consumers. At any rate, producers should be given some encouragement. It was suggested by Mr H. W. Smallbone that the Council support the Milk Zoning Committee in its representation for an increased price.

Mr Kerr: “The first move should be to have milk production made essential.” The suggestion was adopted.
