ST. JAMES THEATRE. Screening finally to-night at 8 p.m. Bette Davis and George Brent in “The Great Lie.” Selected supports complete this excellent programme. Commencing to-morrow at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. and again on Wednesday at 8 p.m., Ida Lupino and Louis Hayward in “Ladies in Retirement,” the exciting story that strips emotion of all disguise . . . lays bare a woman’s soul. Truly a dramatic masterpiece. “Ladies in Retirement,” a moving, relentless story of strange desires and stirring human emotions and is one of the most unforgettable screen plays ever portrayed. The story is set in a picturesque house on the lonely fogbound marshlands close to the English coast. The house is owned by a retired actress. Ida Lupino is her companion, whose efforts to obtain a peaceful sanctuary for her two rather unbalanced sisters is the basic motive of the drama. Louis Hayward, Miss Lupino’s real-life husband, appears in “Ladies in Retirement” as an unprincipled scoundrel —an unsympathetic role, one which will certainly win him new fame. Similarly, lovely Evelyn Keyes has an important part as the country wench with a talent for amorous mischief-making. Every member of the cast of “Ladies in Retirement is uniformly excellent —there is nc conventional hero or heroine there is only passionate emotions in a strange, fascinating story that will grip you to the very last.
