CRICKET.

*> CANTERBURY BEATS ASHBURTON. Canterbury proved too good for Ashburton in the cricket match between representative teams played at Fairfield yesterday, the score being--240 runs to 161 in favour of the visitors. Canterbury batted first and the highlight of their innings was a flawless exhibition by W. McD. 'Anderson, who made 88 runs —the top score of the day. Anderson’s batting was the best seen in the district for many years. Lohrey (35), Vivian (IS) and Whitford (16) were the next highest

scorers, while Holmes also made double figures. Bowling for Ashburton, P. Zouch and L. Winham showed the best form. Top score for Ashburton was made by Winham (28), Walls (26), Zouch (24) and B. Doig (13) being next. Lake, Lohrey and Baxter were the best of the Canterbury bowlers. The win for Canterbury places them two ahead in the six games which have been played against Ashburton. A return match will be played at Christchurch on December 4. FIRST CENTURY OF SEASON. FAIRFIELD BEATS ASHBURTON. Ashburton were well beaten by Fairfield in the Ashburton Cricket Association’s competition game on Saturday, the score being 235 x’uns to 109. The game was played at Fairfield. The pitch was in excellent condition, favouring the batsmen. A feature of the games was the first century of the season, made by D. McKay (Fairfield). Owen and Doig opened for Ashburton —who batted first —and each compiled a steady IS runs before being dismissed. Smallridge (27) was the highest scorer for Ashburton. He hit out aggressively at the commencement of his innings, scoring a six and two fours. His play steadied, however, and when L. Whinham took his wicket he was consistently hitting singles. \

Johnson (three wickets for 24 runs) was the best bowler for Fairfield. McKay, who was one of the opening pair for Fairfield, began quietly but settled to his work as play continued. He was stumped by Porter off Owen, but not before he had knocked up 101 runs—-only eight short of the Ashburton total. His tally included four sixes and 11 fours. Whinham (39 retired) and Depart (37 not out) were his best supporters. E. Price piled up a smart 25 before being well held by Griffiths off Doig. The remainder of the Fairfield batsmen did not impress. The Ashburton bowlers were not outstanding, Owen (two wickets for 11 runs) being the only one to show anything like good form.
