WOMEN’S DIVISION.
THE ASHBURTON BRANCH. The monthly meeting of the Ashburton branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held in the Foresters’ Hail, Mrs A. S. Hay* man presiding over a good attendance. Two new members were proposed. Motions of sympathy with Mrs Duff and Mrs F. Butterick in their bereavement were carried in silence.
Mrs Begg (housekeeper secretary) reported that since September 1 positions had been filled for 211 weeks. The serious position of the scheme in consequence of the further callingup of women for war service, and the desperate plight of certain country women who are in immediate need of domestic help was discussed. An urgent request for consignments of old rubber tyres was received from the Canterbury Reclamation Board. Mrs Miller was in charge of a successful .stall.
A travel letter was received from a pilot officer in Canada.
It was decided to send a donation to the Maori Girls’ College fund.
Competitions resulted: Large bloom, Mrs Meaclem 1, Mrs Copland 2; small bloom, Mrs Houston 1, Mrs Meaclem 2, Mrs Miller 3; rhubarb, Mrs Harper 1, Mrs Begg 2, Mrs Meaclem 3; spring flowers, Mrs Houston 1, Mrs Begg 2, Mrs Meaclem 3. Mrs Lovatt and Mrs Black were the hostesses.
