THREE WARSHIPS SUNK
JAPANESE AT KOLOMBANGARA. TWO DESTROYERS DAMAGED. (Rec. 1.30 p.m.) LONDON, Oct. 8. In a night engagement with Japanese forces that were endeavouring to assist the evacuation of remnants of Japanese troops from Kolombangara, in the (Solomons, Allied warships attacked one Japanese light cruiser and four destroyers. The cruiser and one destroyer were sunk by gunfire. A second destroyer was sunk by torpedoes and both the other destroyers were damaged. The Allied losses are officially described as moderate. —British Official Wireless.
