WASTE MATERIALS.
QUESTION OF COLLECTION POSITION IN THE COUNTY It seemed reasonable in view of the fact that waste materials such as cast' iron, aluminium, brass, copper, zinc, rubber and paper were urgently required to further the Dominion’s war effort that these materials could be collected by members of the Homo Guard whose military training was suspended, the County Chairman (Mr C. A. Campion) told the Council today. He received this suggestion from an officer of the Home Guard and !it appeared well worth considering. ! Messrs S. P. Taylor and H. G. i Crothers expressed the opinion that I the collection of waste materials could I well be undertaken by the Anny. j Mr M. S. Tui-ton: I don’t think the iArmy would entertain the idea. | There was a lot of valuable material ; in the county, said the County Clerk ! (Mr G. Kelly). If it were not for the heavy manual labour involved women could undertake the work. Mr H. C. B. Withell suggested that an appeal be made to women’s organisations to arrange a drive. Heavy work involved could he done by their husbands, and material left- at local points near the roads and collected by the council’s lorries. This suggestion, seconded by Mr W. G. Gallagher, was adopted. It was mentioned by Mr Carr that while there was a great deal of old | machinery and implements on faTms ! it was questionable whether they were ; worth breaking up. He quoted an ini stance where a man took three hours ■ to break up an old disc plough and j when he had finished the metal obtained was only worth 12s Gd.
