RELOCATION OF ROAD.
RANGITATA DIVERSION RACE COUNTY COUNCIL’S ATTITUDE, i A plan for the relocation of a road occasioned by the construction of the Rangitata diversion race has been submitted by the Public Works Department to the Ashburton County Council. It is proposed to close a portion of a road between the properties of Messrs J. R. Dalton and A. McNeil, and replace it by a road leading to the West Coast Road through the properties of Messrs. W. J. Hutchinson and N. Richards. The proposed road joins the present half chain road on the upper side of the diversion race and cuts out a road bridge crossing of the race. Reporting to the County Council today the County Chairman (Mr C. A. Campion) said he had inspected the locality with some of the farmers affected. It appeared that the erection of a bridge over the race at Mr Richards’ property would be more satisfactory to all concerned. The erection of a bridge would probably necessitate a slight deviation of the road leading on to the bridge and the cost of a bridge would be offset considerably by the saving of cost of purchase of land and fencing, and the formation and gravelling of the new road. A letter from the. Department pointed out that it was wished to avoid putting the road beside the diversion race because of the hardship which would be imposed on Mr McNeil, who had already suffered considerably. A report will be submitted by the riding members and the County Engineer (Mr H. A. Vezey) at the next meeting of the Council.
