SWISS POWER STATION. BERNE. The Swiss Budget provides for an annual expenditure of 500,000,000 francs (about £28,000,000 at the current rate) against unemployment, or, to put it more positively, for the provision ol 1 labour.
Wh on the Avar started, Switzerland had some 80,000 unemployed ; the figure to-day is 8000. It was soon realised that unemployment must he prevented at all costs, as it .presented the ideal strata for germs of foreign propaganda. The Swiss therefore decided on a number of plans which are gradually being carried through. They have started building Avliat- Avill probably b<* the biggest electric powel' station in the world, designed to make the country virtually independent ot coal imports. They are. demolishing old hotels and building new ones hi their places to provide the latest comfort when Switzerland once more becomes the holiday playground of Europe.
Moreover, the country is being crisscrossed by motor-roads running from oast to west and south to north.
