VOICE OF DOOM

ALLIED WAR PRODUCTION. TREBLING THE AXIS OUTPUT. GIGANTIC BATTLES FORESEEN. (N.Z. Press Association —Copyright.) (Rev. 11.40 a.m.) TORONTO, July 8. “We will shortly see gigantic battles in which unheard-of quantities of war materials will be consumed,” said Mr Donald Nelson, chairman of the American War Production Board, addressing the Canadian Club. In spite of. the serious effects of spasmodic strikes and riots on war production Mr Nelson warned that the enemy was not to take too much comfort from so-called sagging on the United States home front, and added that in the first five months ; of 1943 only 0.7 per cent, of production was delayed by strikes. “All the United Nations this year will make three times the Axis arms output, and next year the United Nations will quadruple Axis production. These figures speak to the world in a big voice,” Mr Nelson said. “If the Nazi and Japanese war lords are not completely insane they will recognise that it is the voice of doom.” “We plan to produce an umbrella of safety and put it over the heads of the fighting men of the United Nations,” said Mr Nelson in Washington to-day. ....; “We plan to lay down a barrage of safety before them as they advance. We plan to carry them safely through all the waters of the globe on the way to the fighting fronts.”
