SECOND FRONT
MR ROOSEVELT’S DESIRE. GERMAN FORCES PREPARE. REPORTED MOVES INTO ITALY. (N.Z. Press Association —Copyright.) (Roc. in.fi a.m.) LONDON, June 25. President. Roosevelt declared to-day, according to a Washington message, that; his desire for a second front was ns strong ns the Russian people’s desire. Yesterday the Secretary for V nr (Mr H. L. Stimson) reported indications that Germany was moving big forces into France and Italy to meet; an Allied invasion. It is believed in London to be safe to assume that the Germans have about 40 divisions in France and the Low Countries, totalling perhaps 600,000 men, made up of ordinary field service divisions, Panzer divisions and training divisions. This total would exclude non-divisional troops, the Luftwaffe and anti-aircraft troops, R S. units, etc.
Mr Rtimson’s view, to which expression was given -a- few days ago in London, that German troops had been moved into Italian territory recently would seem to find some measure of confirmation from the Berlin radio, which to-night stated that - Sardinia was defended by the “pick of the Axis,” and was now equipped with the means against invasion
