GRAIN AND PRODUCE.

THE ASHBURTON MARKET. The Ashburton grain, seed and produce merchants report a brighter period on the local market. Odd lines of stack-threshed milling wheat continue to come forward and the quality is excellent.

Dunn oats are still in strong demand hut Cartons are hard of sale. Several orders for potatoes have received from the North Island, hut shipping freight is difficult to obtain.

A good inquiry exists for good bright oatsheaf chaff for shipment, but owing to freight difficulties merchants are not keen to operate. New season’s red clover has been offered and up to lid per lb has been paid for lines of choice quality. Cocksfoot is in strong demand but most lines have now been marketed. Other markets show no change.

The following are prices quoted to farmers on trucks at country stations, sacks extra unless otherwise stated: Wheat —Tuscan, May (is 4d (less id j, bushel deduction retained for insurance compensation), Hunters 6s 6d (less deduction). Pearl 6,s 8d (less deduction). Marquis 6s lOd. Oats—Algerians 2s 6d to 3s, Cartons, A grade 3s 6d, JB grade 3s 3d (nominal), Duns 2s 9d to $s 3d. Chaff—G.b.o.s., £4 os a ton.

Ryegrass—Perennial 3s 6d to 4s 6d a bushel. Italian 3s 9d to '4s 6d a bushel, for good farmers’ dressed lines Clover —Red, 9d to lid per lb; white (uncertified) Is to Is 3d per lb. Potatoes —Buttons £8 os, f.0.b.5.i., white and Dakotas £7 15s f.o.b.s.i. The Egg Market. The buying price of hens’ eggs is 2s 4d and the retail price 2s 7d.

ADDINGTON STOCK MARKET.

MUTTON SELLS WELL

CHRISTCHURCH, May 12

Although there were small yardings of store sheep and cattle at the Addington stock market to-day, entiles for fat stock were, again large, hat cattle cased sharply in price. The store sheep comprised only 1030 "lambs and 1066 adult sheep. Ewe lambs showed a rise of 2s a head and sold up to 27s 3d. Wether lambs were in short supply and the best made 19s Id. A line of fat and forward wethers sold for 25s Gd. Ewes in lamb up to 25s 6d.

The fat sheep totalled 6000 against 7000 last week, and included a bigger number of wethers than lor some weeks past. These were of good quality and were keenly competed for bv the trade at prices well in advance cl recent rates and well up to the increased schedule. The highest price was 39s Id and others sold from 32s 7d to 37s Id. Good owes also sold well at tin* now schedule limit, the highest price being 28s ICd. One of the heaviest entries of the season was forward in the fat cattle section and, in addition, the yarding was one of quality. Ihe market uas weaker from the outset and slipped badly for heavy cattle in the concluding stages. Heavy steers were down by 30s a head and medium weights and other quality by 20s. There were some passings. Best medium weight prime steers made 41s per 1001 b. heavy beef to 38s, medium quality to 375, secondary to 345, and inferior to 265.

Except for a pen or two of young cattle there was little attractive in the store pens. I* or most ol the odd lots values wore about the same as those of a week ago. An attractive pen of 17 Black Pol! steer calves, about nine months old, from Crystal Brook, sold at £5 Bs.

The entry of fat pigs was again heavy. There was a large proportion of plain and unfinished pigs 51 nd this (•lass was easier by 6s to 7s a head, while good types were easier by 3s to -Is a head. The average price per lb was 7 id to Ski. Choppers were in medium supply and the demand was keen with no change in values.
