MORE POTATOES.
WANTED NEXT SEASON,
SUPPLYING AMERICAN FORCES. An appeal will shortly be made for an increased acreage of potatoes to be grown in New Zealand next season, with the object of using the surplus to supply United States forces in the South Pacific area. This was revealed to the president of the Ashburton Grain and Seed Merchants’ Association (Mr A. A. McDonald) by Lieutenant Francis A. Raymaley, United States Naval Reserve, of the Joint Purchasing Board and Mr McNatty, of the Food Control Office, who visited Ashburton to-day. They are making a survey of the South Island with a view to estimating the possible tonnage which may be available for consumption by American forces.
Mr McDonald said he understood that the quantity required over and above New Zealand’s usual production would be several thousand tons. He also said that Lieutenant Raymaley announced that the American naval authorities were very much Impressed with the quality of potatoes grown in the South Island.
