AMERICANS IN THE SOLOMONS. TARGETS IN SEVERAL AREAS. (Rec. 1.30 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 24. An American naval communique says: “A Flying Fortress on rriday morning bombed Japanese positions in Rekata Bay, Santa Isabel Island, starting fires. United States positions on Espiritu Island were bombed on Ft’iday night, but details have not . yet betn. reported. Missions against Japanese installations at Munda (New Georgia Island) were accomplished. In the early morning a Catalina patrol bombed an enemy-held area. A large explosion indicated hits on an ammunition dump. At noon a force of Marauder medium, bombers, with an escort of Wildcats and Airacobras,' attacked and silenced an enemy anti-aircraft battery. In too early afternoon Flying E ortresses with Lightning fighters as an escort, attacked the enemy area again and started a number of fires. In the evening Marauders, with Airacobras as an escort, carried out a fourth attack on enemy positions in this area. ■ Saturday Flying Fortresses bombed the enemy’s positions on the Kahili and Ballaral Islands and on the Shortland Island. “On Saturday and Sunday United States positions on Guadalcanal' were attacked, but no details are yet reported. United States ground forces on Guadalcanal’ killed 145 Japanese on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.”— British Official Wireless.
