Tinwald Racing Club—The annual New Year’s race meeting of the Tinwald Racing Club came off yesterday, and proved to bo the most successful of the long series of successful gatherings at South Ashburton. The attendance could not have been far short of 2000; the racing was oxeellenfj the totalisator investments amounted to £11597—-£2O more than last year, although one race resulted in a walkover. On ail sides approval was expressed of the action of the Club m exacting only 10 per cent, of the totaHsator investments.

, Activities at Mouth of River—Nearly all the huts at the mouth of the Ashburton River were occupied during the New Year holidays by Ashburton residents, their families and friends. The number was supplemented yesterday by several picnic parties who motored out to spend a most enjoyable afternoon. The principal amusements were swimming and watching the feats of children, who seated on short pieces of board, produced no end of fun by sliding- down the cliff near the huts. Toward sunset the visitors had the pleasure of witnessing some strange and unusual cloud effects, both on the sea and land. During the night there was a brilliant electrical display ovl'r a bank of dqrk clouds well out to sea.
