NATIONAL SAVINGS.

£323 IN HAND THIS AFTERNOON. » " The Ashburton National Savings Committee had £323 in hand at 2 o’clock this afternoon, leaving £558 to get by noon oii Saturrday. At a meeting of the Committee last evening letters were received from headquarters pointing out that the savings stamp scheme had been very successful in Great .Britain, Canada and United States and there was no reason why it should not be just as successful in New Zealand, as a means of saving by small investors.

The quota system in Ashburton was discussed and it was stated that the contributions here had been affected by the recent loan and bomber week demands but the effects of these calls should be wearing off in the immediate future.

It. was stated that the Committee was hoping to receive substantial sums of money from investors in the County before long.
