BASKETBALL AND FOOTBALL,

ASHBURTON AND TIMARU. Tho annual matches in basketball and football between teams representing tho Ashburton Teclmical High School and the Timaru Technical C'olege were played at Ashburton this morning, when victories were recorded by both the visiting teams. The southern players arrived at 9 o’clock, and were entertained at morning tea by the Ashburton School pupils. The basketball matches were played at the school grounds and the football match was played in the Domain. The ground was difficult- for the football match, the rain having made the surface very slippery. The Timaru forwards wero better on the day than the Ashburton pack, and this gave them their win. There was no score at half-time. For Timaru, D. Henderson scored a try (which was not- converted), and M. Hammond kicked a penalty goal, while ot Asnbur.ton I. Mangin kicked a penalty. Mr T. Hanley was referee. At basketball, Timaru A defeated Ashburton Aby 12 goals to five. The winning team showed some excellent goal shooting. The referee was Mrs Husband. In the B match Ashburton was defeated by 13 goals to three. The winning team had the advantage in quick, short passing of the hall. The referee was Miss Chamberlain.

After lunch the visiters met the pupils of the school for a few minutes and left< for Timaru on the 2 o’clock express train.
