PATRIOTIC FUND.
PROGRESS OF THE COLLECTIONS. 'REPORTS TO THE COMMITTEE. Reports of thb progress of collections in tlie interest of tne patriotic fund were made to a meeting of'the Ashburton Borough Patriotic Committee last evening, when the chairman (Mr A. H. Todd) presided. Advice as to receipt of parcels by New Zealand prisoners of war was received and it was considered that there was no doubt that these parcels were reaching the men regularly. The chairman said that the collection cards for the business area l had been distributed and that a large portion of that area had already been, canvassed. Four representatives of the women’s organisations in Ashburton whose members have taken up a. large proportion of the collections in the residential areas attended the meeting and presented reports on the progress being made in bringing in the regular contributions. It was reported by the treasurer (Mr W. Ri. M. Stewart) that receipts to date (including donations) had totalled £1163 13s, and the expenditure had been £24 19s 2d. There were 35 w'onien collectors at work, it was stated, and the meeting expressed appreciation of the thorough work they were doing. It was agreed to send a letter to householders pointing out that collection tins would be delivered to them shortly after the receipt of the letter, which will point out that through the tins small coins could be contributed at odd times, and even those who were not contributing regular amounts would be enabled to give something. The question of conducting an art union to aid the funds was debated and a. sub-committee was set up to go into it.
