SOLDIERS’ DRINKING.
deputation to premier. (P.A.) AUCKLAND, April 19. Concern at what they held to he a prevalence ot excessive drinking, pai ticularly among soldiers, was expresset to the Prime Minister (the lit. Hon. P. Fraser) by a large deputation from women’s organisations at "Whangaiei to-night. The speakers dealt with the detrimental effect of excessive liquor, and asked for action on the part of the Prime Minister. In reply, Mr Fraser spoke of the difficulties surrounding the matter. The police had been instructed to stop nip abuses in sales. The licensing laws had anomalies which should be amended, but difficulties in war were sometimes overlooked, said Mr Fraser. Soldiers had asked why they should be debarred from taking liquor on trains, when other servicemen and civilians could do so. It was logical to hold that nobody should take liquor into trains.
