FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the “Guardian,” April 20, 1892) Chess—The inauguration of the chess department of the Ashburton Club last evening was very successful. Upwards of twenty players attended and apologies were received from others who could not attend that evening but would do so. in future when possible. Several of the players showed great proficiency in the game, and expressed willingness to instruct less skilful ers. By the introduction of chess, tho institution will no doubt gain in popularity and membership. Tuesday and Friday evenings have been fixed tor regular meetings. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (Prom the “Guardian,” April 20, 1917) Borough Elections—His Worship the PJayor, Mr R. Galbraith (who was nominated by Messrs R. Dunlop and4B. Crooks) has been re-elected unopposed to the office of Mayor for the Ashburton Borough. Nominations received for the nine vacancies on the Borough Council are: Harry R. C. McElrea, G. \A r . Andrews, Ilobt. Kerr, G. H. Buchanan, F. Z. D. Ferriman, Alfred Jas. Grigg, AY. G. Hillier, H. A. \ T estw F. W. AVatt. and John Watson.
