OPEN EWE FAIR

PRICES SHOW SOME DECLINE. YARDING OF ABOUT 12,000. SHEEP OF POOR QUALITY. Prices at the open ewe fair held at the Timvald saleyards to-day were much easier on values at the Ashburton County Breeders’ Fair last Monday. There was a fair attendance of farmers, but the bidding was dull and many pens were passed in. The entry was quite large compared with that last, year, when about 4000 sheep were yarded. It was estimated that there Avere approximately 12,000 sheep at the yards to-day. Compared with the sheep at the breeders’ fair, the quality on the whole was poor. The fair did not commence until shortly after 12 o’clock, the fat stock market being held before it. Up till about 1 o’clock the top price was 34s 9d, against 39s 6d obtained at the fair last week. The principal sales up until 1 o’clock were: Pyne, Gould, Guinness, Ltd., sold on account of D. Mclntosh (Methven), 44 ewe lambs at 23s 3d; “Elephant Hill,” 70 ewe lambs at 15s lOd; clients, 114 lambs at 8s 9d, 78 4-th. at 24s 3d, 75 2-th. at 23s 6d, 55 2-th. at 23s 6d, 33 2- at 255. National Mortgage and Agency Co., on account of J. Reid (Mt. Somers), 93 3- at 255, 19 2-th. at 34s 9d, 157 2-th. at 18s 3d, 11 2-th. at 10s 6d. The New Zealand Farmers.’ Co-op. Assn., on account of clients, 70 2-th. at 23s 6d, 67 at 29s 3d.

GOOD SALE OF FAT SHEEP. There was a moderate yarding of fat sheep for the fortnightly stock sale at the Tinwald yards to-day. Prices were good and up about Is to Is 6d a head on the sale last week at Ashburton. For raising the funds of the Hinds gymkhana the following sheep were sold: 3 wethers at 23s 4d, 26 lambs at 24s Id and 17 lambs at 27s 7d. The top price for ewes went to A. J. Henderson (Wiliowby) for a pen of six animals. Numerous pens were sold from between 13s 4d and 15s. 7d. Fat wethers brought from 21s Id to 25s lOd, top price being obtained by J. H. Horrell (Lagmhor), for a pen of five. Lambs brought up to 25s for a pen of six belonging to J. O’Connor (Ashton). The main sales were: Fat Ewes —On account of J. M.
