THE HOME GUARD.
PROVISION FOR COMPULSION. APPROVAL BY WAR CABlNfif. (P.A.) WELLINGTON, March 8. The War Cabinet’s approval of a proposal* dealing with compulsory training for the Home Guard is mentioned in a statement made by the Prime Minister (the R't. Hon. P. Fraser), and reference is also made to other measures being taken in making for the efficiency of this Home Defence force. It is stated by the Prime Minister that the War Cabinet has given general approval to the following proposals:— (1) Provision to compulsory powers to ensure that members of the Home Guard discharge their obligations. (2) Power to transfer mien from the Home Guard to the Emergency Re-sei-ve Corps; and (3) Power to transfer suitable men from the Emergency Reserve Corps to the Home Guard. The statement is made by the Prime Minister in reply to representations from certain quarters in the north on the measures to be taken to fill the ranks of the Home Guard and to provide uniforms and clothing for the members of the Guard.
‘“These proposals,” the Prime Minister states in his reply, “are being examined by the Army and National Service Departments, and, subject to there being no unforeseen difficulties, ithey wiil be implemented by amending regulations.” ' Discussing uniforms, many of which have now been issued to Home Guard units, the Prime Minister states: “It is a matter of regret to the Gov : ernment that it has not been possible to date fully to clothe and equip the Home Guard. You will appreciate, however, that large numbers of men called up for service in the Territorial Forces have made exceptional demands on clothing and equipment, but I can assure you that immediately the supply situation permits issues will be made to the Guard.
“The Quartermaster-General informs me that up to the present 11,260 service uniforms have been issued to the Home Guard and the number is rapidly mounting up. I do hope that members of the Home Guard will accept the inevitable situation with the consciousness that clothing and equipment will be issued to them as soon as possible. The War Cabinet issued instructions a long time ago that the production of uniforms should be pushed on to the utmost extent, and we are assured that this is being done.’*
