BOROUGH SCHOOL
' ADDITIONAL ROOM NEEDED. ROLL OF 436 CHILDREN. The Ashburton Borough School Committee held its monthly meeting last evening, the chairman (Mr W. H. Sarney) presiding. There were also present Messrs C. H. Amos (secretary), W. K. Waters, N. L. Milner and the headmaster (Mr M. J. Leith). A letter was received from the Education Department advising that the Building Controller stated that permission to build the proposed swimming pool had not been granted. The Canterbury Education Board wrote that it had decided to apply to the Department for a grant to meet the cost of erecting an additional classroom.
The chairman emphasised the definite shortage of space and the necessity of an extra room. Sixty odd children were in the present room. It was decided to send a further letter to the Board explaining the position. In order to prevent wastage that has crept in where water consumption is measured through a meter the Education Board wrote requesting the Committee to arrange with the local authorities for monthly readings of the meters. Any wastage will then be discovered promptly.
Mr Sarney was appointed to confer with the Borough Engineer (Mr J. R. Richardson) on the matter. •
The headmaster reported that the present roll number was 436. At the County Swimming Sports the pupils of the school had made a very creditable showing, winning the Milsom Cup for most points.
