( A Maori woman, Erina LPaul, aged 20, yesterday pleaded not guilty and was committed for trial on a charge of manslaughter of her newly-born infant on December 31. The evidence showed that accused gave birth to the child on the foreshore of Whangarei harbour, and returned immediately and undetected; to. the house nearby, where 1 she had stayed as guest the previous night, her hosts being unaware of her condition. On January 3 a dog was found on the beach with the body cf an infant, which it had obviously mangled. Tlr.s led to iiKjuiries by tlie police. Accused admitted haying left the infant among the rushes, but did not know whether it was dead or alive. A medical witness expressed the •opinion, that the infant had breathed, death being due to exposure and lack of necessary attention.
