WASHINGTON, October 20

Mr W- Averell Harriman, who led the United States delegation to the Moscow Conference,, has advised Mr Roosevelt that he has great confidence in Russia’s ability to stand up against the Nazi military machine. The Secretary of the Treasury (Mr Henry Morgenthau) announced that the Government had advanced the Soviet another 30,000.000 dollars against gold which Russia, will send to the United States. One thousand Protestant bishops, clergy, and editors have sent a letter to Mr Roosevelt, appealing for all-out aid to Russia. They declared that Communist infiltration in the United States is exaggerated. “Not one member of any branch of our Government is Communist,” the letter said.
