The South Canterbury Jockey Club held a most successful meeting on the Washdyke racecourse on Saturday. The weather was fine, and there was an exceptionally large attendance. Speculation was well maintained, the sum of £17,548 10s being handled as against £16,002 10s at last year’s meeting, an increase of £1546. Details of the racing are as follows: Taiko Hack Handicap, of £120; six furlongs. —7-8 Gold Don 7.10 (B. Brodie) 1, 2-1 Willow Wood 8.1 2, 6-6 Grey Night 7.11 3. VELOCITY WINS CAULFIELD CUP MELBOURNE, October 18. The weather was fine and the attendance enormous for the third day of the Victoria Amateur Turf Club’s meeting at Flemington to-day. The totalisator figures were £133,142, an all-time record for one day since the machine was installed in Victoria. The pi’Gvious best, was £127,376 last .Melbourne Cup Day. Caulfield Cup, of £6500; 14 miles— Velocity 8.3 (J. Purtell) 1, Reading Brl2 (Thompson) 2, Evergreen 8.0 (W. Cook) 3. There were 25 starters. Won by a head. Time, 2.294. Velocity was first to leave the machine, hut Rctnuha made most of the pace with Beau Vite, Sir Locket and Carlton the last throe. Rimveil led into tho straight, followed by Tranquil Star, Reading, Lucrative, and Velocity. The lastnamed never left the rails at any sago of the race, and won in an exciting finish by a head, with Evergreen a length behind Reading. Then came Rimveil, Tx-iggerman, Tnieflight, and Lucrative, with Beau Vite, Sir Locket, and Rotnuha tho last three.
