MALAYA TO NEW ZEALAND. CONFERENCE IN AUSTRALIA. MELBOURNE, October 17. A review of plans for an unbroken, defence chain through Malaya and northern Australia to Now Zealand was completed at a conference of the Australian War Cabinet, with the Comamnder-in-Chief, in the Far East (Sir Robert Brooke-Popham) and the chiefs of the Australian fighting services. , . r . . When the conference ended a Goaemment spokesman indicated that all parties were well satisfied with the progress made in strengthening Pacific defences since collaboration began earlv this year. Sir Robert Brooke-Popham said “M e do not want Avar Avith Japan, but if Japan insists Ave are going to be ready.” He emphasised the importance of Australian munitions to supply the British forces in the Far East and advocated the establishment of a Beaufort bomber station at Singapore. The Australian Prime Minister (Mr J. Curtin) said that already the Great Barrier Reef, off Queensland, had been mined, and mines had also been laid, between Australia and Thursday Island and -between Australia, and New Zealand.
