APPLES DUMPED.

ABOUT W TONS> AT BLUFF. (P A.) INVERCARGILL, Oct. 16. A small mountain of apples, estimated at about 13 tons or 700 oases, has accumulated* thisv week at the Bluff rubbish dump. Residents who have been’ aware- of the- position have- reaped' a harvest; and substantial quantities of apples have been removed. The official explanation is that the ftuit came out of cool; store in a condition which made its sale impracticable, The; fruit was dumped only after local piggery owners had been given an opportunity> to* use it. Bluff cool stores:- have held about 60,000 cases of apples during the present season, and; it is contended by representatives of the Internal Marketing Division that the percentage discarded as waste is not excessive. An Invercargill party visited the dump to-day and collected several sugar-bags full of fruit which was considered to be sound. Bluff residents have been visiting the dump during 'the last few days. The quantity of apples removed is- estimated to total several hundredweights. One person stated that the first lorry loads which were discarded: were sprayed with kerosene to make them inedible. He expressed indignation that such action should be taken to prevent the public from rescuing, edible; and valuable food; which many? poor families could have used.
