THE CITY SET ON FIRE FLAMES VISIBLE FOR MILES (United Press Association—Copyright.) (Rec. 11.5 a.m.) LONDON, October 16. The German News Agency announced that Rumanian troops marched into Odessa this, afternoon. The Agency added that the Russians and Rumanians are fighting in the streets, every Russian capable of bearing arms going into action. A Rumanian communique issued this morning states: “ Rumanians have broken through the defences of Odessa, where the Russians are retreating along the front. Odessa is in flames. Fighting is continuing. ! The Rumanians captured Gniliakovo, 13 miles north-west of Odessa, Delnjik, six miles west of Odessa, and Taratea, six miles south-west of Odessa.” The Bucharest correspondent of the Associated Press says that Rumanian dispatches state that Odessa harbour and city are being devastated by fire. Flames leaping hundreds of feet are visible for miles. Rumanian reconnaissance pilots report scenes of the utmost confusion within “the hopelessly doomed city.”
