LACK OF TRANSPORT.
NEW ZEALANDERS IN SYDNEY. POSITION SAID TO BE SERIOUS. (P.A.) AUCKLAND, September 21. Referring to reports that 600 persons were stranded in Australia through lack of transport to New Zealand, Aucklanders who have recently returned confirmed the difficulties that are being experienced in securing berths. The shipping offices in Sydney were besieged by. persons unable to secure accommodation, it was stated. “The position is definitely serious,” one man said. “I had made a reservation for my return before leaving Auckland, but I was notified that it had been cancelled. It was only at the last moment that accommodation was found for me. A friend of mine managed to secure a berth even later.” Another returned traveller said he had heard of persons who had been waiting for two months for a ship. Many were running short of funds, and although arrangements were beingmade for them to transfer money from New Zealand most of them could not afford to wait indefinitely in Australia. “Three or four persons came to me asking if I could do anything to help them to get accommodation,” another man said. “Some had been to the shipping offices time after time, but were still unable to get a berth.”
