ISLAND FRUIT.

HIGHER PRICES WANTED.

GROWERS PETITION HOUSE. (P.A.) WELLTNNGTON, Sept, 10. The chairman of the Industries and Commerce Committee, Mr J. Hodgens, reporting to the House of Representative on the petition of Putua Rangatira (W. P. Browne) of Rarotonga, said the committee recommended that the findings of the Parliamentary delegation which reported on the Cook Islands fruit industry in 1936 should he further considered with a view to giving effect where practicable to such recommendations of the delegation as had not yet been carried out. The committee urged that consideration he given to the long-term citrus planting plan brought down at the time, and also expressed the opinion that steps should fie taken *to assist in banana planting to repair the damage done by the recent hurricane in the Cook Islands. The committee recommended that its report be referred to the Government for favourable consideration, and this was agreed to.

The petitioner had' asked for an increase in the price paid to Rarotongan growers for bananas and oranges, that assistance should' ho given to growers under the banana planting scheme, and that Rarotongan special citrus fruits be sold on the open market in New Zealand on a consignment basis.
