MONEY FOR SOLDIERS.
MEN KILLED OR CAPTURED AMOUNTS TO BE RETURNED (P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Many inquiries are being received by Base Records respecting the return of money sent to New Zealand soldiers in the Middle East who for some time past have been known to have been either killed or taken prisoner, and who under those circumstances could not have received their remittances.
Inquiry as to the probability of the return of the money so remitted in the middle of May was made at Base Records and the only answer from the officials was that the money would be forthcoming from the Treasury when the requisite advice had been received from the Pay Department of the Army in Egypt. Most of the money remitted to soldiers was sent by cable so that the delay in delivery should not have been very long, although' difflcuL ties were encountered in transferring it in cases where the recipients were engaged in Greece or Crete. It was made possible for them to cash army chits in either of those places, so it is thought likely that many of these remittances were received. Others were probably never delivered.
The whole matter had been rendered difficult to straighten out by the loss of records in Crete. All that officers at Base Records can say is that persons whose remittances to soldiers overseas have not been cashed will receive back their money as soon as the authorising advice has been received from the Army Pay Department in the Middle East.
