NOVELIST’S WILL.
£IO,OOO LEFT TO SECRETARY. LONDON, August 13. Sir Hugh Walpole, the novelist, who died in June, left £43,116 (net personalty £29,537). He left £IO,OOO to Harold Cheevers, and the residue of his property to his brother, Robert, and his sister, Dorethea. Behind the announcement that Mr Harold Cheevers receives £IO,OOO is the story of a friendship that began with a London policeman’s bravery 20 years ago. A schoolgirl,, dashing through West End traffic, fell. A young policeman, on point duty, pulled her to safety just before a bus passed over the spot. Among those who congratulated the policeman was H. Walpole, then on on© of his rare visits to London from his Cumberland home. P.C. Harold Cheevers received no recognition for his bravery, but Waipole did not forget him and a few months later Cheevers left the police force to drive the novelist’s car. When Walpole’s secretary retired, Cheevers combined duties of chauffeur and secretary.
