"GETTING AWAY WITH IT,”

The moral order of the universe is a 'phrase which used to be more widely current in philosophical and religious circles than it is to-day, writes Dr. ‘Sidney M. Berry. Men do not accept so easily the assertion that the universe is so ordered that the great moral principles justify themselves in action, and that obedience to them brings its immediate reward. The kind of world we are living in to-day is apt to breed a surface cynicism in thought and speech about the operation of the laws of life. There are occasions without number when there seems to be a positive advantage in lack of scruple and relentlessness. We speak of men being 'able “to get away with it,” suggesting that they can safely jettison their principles and yet conserve their gains. There is danger in that kind of cynicism, for at its worst it can almost persuade us that moral scruples are a weakening inhibition, and that to face the adversary on equal terms we must first of all adopt his creed.
