GRAIN AND PRODUCE THE ASHBURTON MARKET. Another qniot week has boon reported- on the local market by the Ashburton grain, seed and produce merchants and recent heavy rains have held up sowing of wheat, and in some cases the land has become so saturated that a change in the cropping programme may be necessary. Carton oats are still in demand, but supplies of this variety are now difficult to locate.
Contrary to expectations, the rough weather has not stimulated the demand for chaff.
The potato market still remains quietj and few sales are taking place.
Ryegrass, cocksfoot and white clover remain firm at recent quotations.
Following are prices quoted to farmers, on trucks, sacks extra, free of commission : r
Wheat—Tuscan 5s IOJd, Hunters 6s O-Jd, Velvet 6s 2-Jd, Marquis 6s 4jd (all f.0.b.).
Oats—A Gartons 3s to 3s 3d, B grade 2s 9d to 2s lOd; Algerians 2s 5d to 2s Sd, Duns 3s 3s for heavy dark quality, 2s 3d to 2s 8d for light and inferior.
Grass Seeds—Perennial to 3s 6d, Italian 3s to 3s 6d, according to quality ; cocksfoot Is per lb, according to quality. Red clover Is to Is 4d per lb, white Is 6d to 2s per lb. Peas—Partridge 6s to 6s 3d. Chaff—Good bright oatsheaf £3 15s. Potatoes—Dakotas £8 a ton, Sutton’s £8 10s. Linseed (f.a.q.)—£l3 per ton.
Thes Egg Market. There is still a good supply of eggs on the Ashburton market and values are weak, it is anticipated that summer pi-ices will probably be ruling by Monday. The buying price to-day was Is -2d a dozen and the selling price Is 4d. THE SHARE MARKET. The following sates were made on tin--Christchurch Stock Exchange yesterday : LISTED STOCKS. Sale on 'Change.

. THE STOCK SALES. BURNSIDE. (P.A.) DUNEDIN, August 20. All sections experienced a keen demand at the Burnside sale and values generally were above late levels. More than 270 fat cattle were penned. Steers appreciated by .01 and cows and heifers 27s to 30s a head. (Prime bullocks made £2O 2s 6d to £22 17s 6d, good £l7 12s (kl to £l9> 7s 6d, medium £l3 17s 6d to £ls 17s 6d, light £l2 12s 6d ; extra prime* cows and heifers £l3 12s Gd to £l6 17s Gd, medium £0 17s Gd to £ll 12s Gd. light to £7 17s 6d.
There was a yarding of 1926 fat sheep. Prime wethers and ewes were Is to Is 6d above last week’s rates. Extra prime wethers made 29s 6d to 30s 6d, medium 25s to 27s Gd’ light to 235; ewes 27s 3d to 30s 9d, good 22s 3d to 25s 3d, medium 17s 6d to 19s 3d. There, was a very keen demand for bacon pigs,- which made late rates, while porkers were from par to a shade easier.
ADDTNGTON. (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 20. At Addington to-day entries were small except in the fat cattle section. Only a ,few pens of store sheep were offered, as vendors had difficulty in getting stock in after the recent wet weather.
The fat sheep entry was a small one, but hoteliers’ requirements were also restricted. The sale was a good one for best quality which was 6d to Is a head better than at the double market a fortnight ago. Best wethers made 31s to 40s 4d, medium 24s fid to 30s 6d, best ewes 23s 6d to 30s Id, medium 19s to 235. ■
The fat* cattle entry was a heavy one, but of very poor quality. Best beef sold at late rates, but the rest was £1 a head cheaper. Extra good heavy steers realised up to £23 12s 6d ; prime medium-weight steers, £l4 to £l6 15s; ordinary steers. £lO 10s to £l3 15s; light steers .to £lO ss; extra prime heifers to £l7 2s 6d; prime heifers, £ll to £l2 10s; medium heifers, £8 to £lO 15s; light heifers to £7 10s; extra prime cows to £ls 7s 6d ; prime cows, £8 to £lO ss; medium cows, £5 15s to £7 15s; inferior cows, £4 5s to £5 10s. There was only a skeleton entry of store cattle, there being no straight lines of cattle. The demand was quite keen for all classes which consisted mainly of odd cows suitable for grazing. Good, fresh cows made up to £5 13s Od, others to £3 15s. Black Polled steei?; sold at £6 18s, and heifers of the same breed at £6 3s.
A very heavy yarding of porkers came forward, but prices were about the same as last sale until the end
when there was a fall of 3s a head. There was a medium entry of baeoners which showed little change in values except for very heavy pigs which were 5s a head cheaper. Choppers realised from £2 18s 6d to £6 13s 6d; light porkers, 43s 6d to 47s 6d; medium porkers, 52s 6d to 57s 6d ; -heavy porkers. 58s 6d to £3 6s 6d ; average price, 73 d to 93d per lb. Light baeoners fetched £3 7s 6d to £3 14s 6d ; medium baeoners, £3 15s 6d to £3 19s 6d; heavy baeoners, £4 4s 6d to £4 9s 6d ; extra heavy baeoners. £4 10s 6d to £5 4s 6d ; average price per Hi, 6;}d to 7JdStore pigs sold as follows Small wen tiers. 6s to 8s; medium woaners, 9s to 14s; extra good woaners to 245; slips, 15s to 20s; small stores, 18s to 21s; medium stores, 22s to 255; large stores, 26s to 295; sows in pig, £3 to £O.
