STATE HOUSES.
AN UNSATISFIED DEMAND (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 4. More than 20,000 applications for State houses remain unsatisfied, said the Minister of Housing (the Hon. H. T. Armstrong) to-day, when he reiterated the Government’s intention; to proceed with house- building in accordance with supplies of materials and labour available. The housing shortage, he said, was still most acute in the North Island Auckland and Wellington alone having about 8000 applications each before the department. Actually the Housing Department had fulfilled only about one-third of the Dominion’s requirements.
Every effort, said Mr Armstrong, was being made to overcome the shortage of building materials as a result of the import difficulties. . The time was rapidly approaching when houses would be built entirely of New Zealand-made materials. '
Asbestos cement sheeting, which was being manufactured' in increasing quantities in Auckland and in various colours, was being used as a substitute for galvanised iron for roofing purposes. Recently the department had built a house in Wellington from asbestos sheeting, and it appeared'to be quite satisfactory.
