LOOKING BACK.
FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the “Guardian,” July 9. 1891). Hotels in Ashburton—A leading article states: “A street observance of the provisions of the Licensing Acts as regards bunuay trading was enjoined upon the hotelkeepers ol Ashinuton by the incensing committee at the annual meeting last month, and it is said that something like an agreement was entered into by the licensees to act m accordance with the wishes of the Committee. Certainly most ol the hotels have done so, whether of their own motion or m terms of a compact need not be said. But .statements have been made to us that tnoio have, been exceptions—one is very circumstantially alleged —to the rule. No cioubt similar statements have reached the incensing Committee, and although no action appears as yet to have been taken by the poiipe, the bunday trading—if our information is correct, winch we have no reason to doubt—has been earned on so openly that it cannot be disregarded, 'lhese who have observed the law deservo every credit, and should not suffer from the illicit competition of less particular neighbours.
