DEFENCE OF PACIFIC.
SINGAPORE BASE PREPARED. DUTCH EAST INDIES ACTIVE. (Rec. 10.5 a.m.) SINGAPORE, July 7. The authorities report that the Singapore base has been made ready for servicing any Allied fleet, with ample stores inland. The East Indies Marine Department is completing a huge expansion programme at Sourabaya, where the defences of the approaches have been greatly strengthened. Amboins Isle is now a modern base, extending the striking power of the South-west Pacific democracies by 600 miles to the north.
