MAORI CASUALTIES.
THE FIGHTING IN GREECE. (P.A.) HASTINGS. May 21. According to advice received by the Acting-Prime Minister (the. Hon. W. Nash) from the Prime Minister (the Pt. Hon. P. Fraser), a few Maori-sol-diers who took part in the Greek campaign have been returned to Egypt. Others are in Crete, and a number so far have not been accounted for.
Mr Nash, in a telephone conversation to-night with the Bishop of Aotearoa (tho Rt. Bev. F. A. Bennett) said lie had received a cabled message from Mr Fraser concerning Maori troops in the. Middle East. The way in which the evacuation had 1 been carried out made it difficult to learn how many New Zealanders had fared, said Mr Fraser. The Maori units had been scattered, and it might be some time before they were united. The deaths of two Maori soldiers had so far been reported, said Bishop Bennett, hut this could not be taken as an indication that casualties were light. It is known that the Maoris had seen fierce and heavy fighting at Mount Olympus, and some lesses must be expected.
